Trace mineral and nutrients such as iodine, magnesium, copper, zinc, chlorophyll, anti-oxidants, anthocyannins and over thirty additional nutrients.

These nutrients are being rapidly depleted from our soils, and therefore, do not get absorbed by many of the conventionally farmed foods that arrive on your dinner table each day.

Over time, you can develop nutritional deficiencies that cause your energy to drop, your sleep to become disrupted, and your general health to sag.

Most likely, many of today’s health issues could be improved, if people would give their bodies the right nutrients, from the right sources.

But what are these sources...and why aren't we getting the nutrition we need from our modern diets?


Not So Fast
It turns out that many of the foods we eat today--and in particular plant foods--lack key nutrients that they had in abundance, just 50 short years ago.

There are two simple reasons for that:

1. Plants commercially grown for food grow too fast using today's methods.

There’s been a steady decline in measureable levels of protein and minerals in most of the food crops over the past 50 years, in large part, because today's plants grow too fast.

By growing fast— being fueled by synthetic fertilizers — plants today don't have time to absorb nutrients like they did when they were left to grow more slowly.

This means the plants you eat today can’t fuel your body as efficiently as those same varieties of plants did in the past, because they are lower in nutritional value.

Why is that the case?

This brings me to the second reason...

2. Crops grown for food production are overcrowded
I'll explain this point in more detail below...


Too Many Plants, Not Enough Nutrients
Overcrowding the plants means that they will compete for nutrients, and you’ll end up with straggly, weak and undernourished plants (yielding similarly weak crops).

Again, you could not overcrowd commercially produced crop and plants in the days before synthetic fertilizers, because one of the chief limiting factors to a plants groth is nitrogen.

Nitrogen “fixes” into the soil, when certain plants (like clover) are planted, and is absorbed by other plants that need a lot of nitrogen (like corn) in order to grow.

Enter chemical fertilizers to save the day…or so it seemed at the time.

With chemical fertilizers, you can put nitrogen into the soil in dense concentrations that normally don't exist in nature. This concentrated level of fixed-nitrogen means that you can pack more plants in a field, per acre, and they’ll still grow fine.

Even though these plants grow well, they will still compete for nutrients in the soil--however, with enough available water (with irrigation) and nitrogen, the plants don’t need as many nutrients to fuel their growth as they once did.

This process results in crops that grow quickly, and deliver a high “yield” or amount of crops per acre (since they are crowed next to each on the land). Yet these crops actually absorb fewer nutrients in order to grow, have fewer nutrients available to them (due to poor soil nutrients) and are therefore less nutritious.

The downside to all this fantastic appearing yield and growth is the fact that these crops are growing so fast, and are supplemented with so much nitrogen and additional water that their nutrient levels are “watered-down” for a lack of better description.

Over the years, current farming practices have not replenished the soils with nutrient dense fertilizers that used to replace the nutrients pulled out of the ground by the plants.

Therefore, the nutritional value of crops—and garden vegetables—has declined over the years.

Your Declining Iodine
Another example of a trace mineral that your body needs, and often doesn’t get in modern diets, is iodine.

Iodine is critical in maintaining your thyroid gland health, and is chiefly found in seafood and sea vegetables. If your thyroid is imbalanced, you can become nervous, irritable, overly-tired, exhauted, have a difficult time maintaining your body weight...and more.

In particular, the northern half of the United States is deficient in iodine, with the problem getting more pronounced the further in you get from either coast.

In large part, this is due to soils that are low in iodine, as well as the asbsence of ocean seafood in these parts of the country. There may be other reasons, too--like exposures to petrochemicals and other toxins--but in either case, people in these areas have historically low iodine.

As a precautionary measure, it is wise to increase your levels of foods that contain naturally occurring forms of iodine…foods such as kelp, wakame, nori and other seaweed...to balance your thyroid health.

If you are not eating these foods, then it is a good idea to look for a green super food that does include those ingredients.

That’s why I made to include a variety of iodine-containing seaweed and algal sources — including kelp, sea whistle, bladderwrack, and chlorella — when I put together Miley Labs UltraGreens.
