I have an interesting article from the Mayo Clinic for you to read today–discussing the ways in which fish oil benefits your heart and entire cardiovascular system.

As you would imagine, the Mayo Clinic does not endorse using fish oil in place of other medical treatments to address heart disease–however, that is really beyond the scope of what fish oil would do, anyway.

The best use of fish oil, and in particular Omega-3 fatty acids, in my opinion, is to incorporate it into your health program as a means of preventing health complications, and as a way of maintaining your best health.

Fish oil benefits are many, and chief among some of the more exciting scientific studies in recent years is the understanding that fish oil has the capacity to help lower triglyceride levels in the body. This is important, because triglyceride levels have been shown to increase your risk of having a heart attack.

Although in the early stages of review, medical research is seeing promising data that indicates fish oil may very well lower serum cholesterol in the body, increasing levels of HDL (desirable) cholesterol, while slightly decreasing levels of LDL (undesirable at high levels) cholesterol.

Fish oil also has a cardiovascular benefit, in that it seems to thin blood slightly, which makes it easier for the blood to flow through vessels–reducing the risk of arterial blockages, and promoting naturally healthy blood pressure levels.

Docosehexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) are two long-chained fatty acids unique to fish oil, not found in any other sources. And in order to get enough DHA and EPA, you should eat salmon, mackerel, sardines or other fatty fish up to three times per week. However, with the risk of eating high levels of mercury from fish, it is not always wise to eat this much fish every week.

Cayenne Peppers Help Relieve Migraines

I see a lot of patients, women mostly, with migraine headaches.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is very effective for treating migraine headaches, which by and large, have some roots of imbalance in the functions governed by the Liver and Gallbladder and their respective regions of dominance in the body.

What does that mean? It means the Chinese mapped out a system of energy lines or “meridians” that symmetrically flow through the body, carrying vital energy from internal organs to various parts of the body. The Liver meridian, for example, goes through the reproductive organs, through the breasts, to the throat, up to the eyes and to the top of the head.

The Gallbladder meridian carries energy from the Liver meridian, back down the neck, over the shoulder and down the side of the body.

Migraine headaches, because they typically affect the vision, present around or behind the eyes (or back of the neck) immediately raise suspicions that the Liver energy is somehow blocked or congested, manifesting as a headache.

Acupuncture treatments can move the Liver and Gallbladder energy, helping to reduce or eliminate migraines, althogether.

If, on the other hand, you are not near and acupuncturist, and need to find some home remedy to defeat migraines, you may try this remedy, which comes from the article as it appeared in the New York Times.

This study found that migraine sufferers found relief by stirring 1/4 teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper into four ounces of warm water. Dip a cotton tipped ear cleaning swab (Q-tip) into this solution and apply it to the inside of you nostrils. Odd as it sounds, once the burning subsides, your migraine should be much better!
